How to Track Your Subscription Payments and Stop Wasting Money

Subscriptions have a way of multiplying quietly. You sign up for a streaming service during a free trial, add a gym membership, subscribe to a meal kit box, and before you know it there are eight or nine monthly payments leaving your account that you have stopped thinking about. Research suggests the average UK household spends over six hundred pounds a year on subscriptions, and a good chunk of that goes on services people rarely use.

Step One: Find Them All

The first step is figuring out exactly what you are paying for. Go through your bank and credit card statements for the last three months and list every recurring payment. Do not just look at direct debits. Many subscriptions are paid by card and will show up as regular card transactions rather than formal direct debits. Look for names you recognise and names you do not. Some subscription charges appear under company names that are different from the brand you signed up with.

Step Two: List Everything

Write down every subscription you find, along with how much it costs and when it renews. Include everything: streaming services, music, cloud storage, software, gym, insurance add-ons, magazine subscriptions, app subscriptions, and anything else that charges you regularly. Seeing them all in one list is often surprising. Most people discover at least one or two payments they had completely forgotten about.

Step Three: Categorise by Value

Go through your list and sort each subscription into one of three categories:

  • Definitely keep. You use it regularly and it provides clear value. Netflix you watch every week, the cloud storage you rely on, the gym you actually go to.
  • Maybe. You use it sometimes but could probably live without it. That second streaming service you dip into once a month, for instance.
  • Cancel. You have not used it in weeks or months. The free trial you forgot to cancel. The app you downloaded once and never opened again.

Step Four: Cancel the Dead Weight

For anything in the cancel category, do it now. Not tomorrow, not at the weekend, now. The longer you leave it, the less likely you are to follow through. Most subscriptions can be cancelled online through the provider's website or app. For the stubborn ones that require a phone call, set a reminder to do it during your lunch break.

Step Five: Track Renewals Going Forward

The subscriptions you decide to keep will still need monitoring. Free trials become paid subscriptions. Annual renewals bring price increases. The only way to stay on top of it is to have a system that tells you when something is about to renew so you can decide whether to continue.
