What happens when your MOT expires

Missing your MOT is not just a paperwork issue. It is serious.

Driving without one is illegal

You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT. Some exemptions apply if you are driving to a pre-booked test.

Your insurance is invalid

Most car insurance policies require a valid MOT. Without one, a claim may be rejected and you could be classed as uninsured.

Scrambling for a last-minute slot

Good garages book up weeks in advance. Leaving it to the last minute means taking whatever test slot you can find, often at a premium.

How it works

1

Upload your MOT certificate

Snap a photo or upload the PDF. Orlo reads the registration, expiry date, and mileage automatically.

2

Accept the reminders

Orlo suggests three reminders: 6 weeks, 2 weeks, and 3 days before expiry. Accept the ones you want.

3

Get reminded in plenty of time

Email and push notifications land in your inbox and on your phone when each reminder is due. Book your test, keep driving legally.

Frequently asked questions

When should I book my MOT?
You can book up to one month early without losing any time on your certificate. The new certificate will still run from the old expiry date. Orlo's six-week reminder gives you plenty of time to find a slot that suits you.
Can I check my MOT expiry date for free online?
Yes, the DVLA has a free MOT history checker at gov.uk. But it only tells you the date. Orlo stores your MOT certificate, sends you reminders before expiry, and keeps all your vehicle documents together with insurance, tax, and V5C.
What if my MOT has already expired?
You cannot legally drive the car except to a pre-booked MOT test. Book a test immediately, drive straight to the test centre, and if it passes you are legal again from that moment. Orlo stops this happening in the first place by reminding you six weeks in advance.
Does Orlo remind me about other vehicle documents?
Yes. Vehicle tax, driving licence, V5C logbook, service records, and insurance renewals are all supported. Upload them and Orlo tracks the expiry dates alongside your MOT.
How do I get reminders?
Reminders are sent by email (all plans) and push notification on iOS (Android coming soon). You also get a weekly digest every Monday morning summarising everything coming up.
Is it really free?
Yes. The free plan includes 5 uploads per month, which is enough for your MOT, insurance, and vehicle tax. Basic is £2.99/month for 50 uploads with all features unlocked.
