When Does My Car MOT Expire and How to Check
Your car's MOT expiry date is one of those things you probably know roughly but not exactly. And roughly is not good enough, because driving without a valid MOT is illegal and can have consequences that go well beyond a fine.
How to Check Your MOT Status
The quickest way to check when your MOT expires is through the official GOV.UK website. Go to gov.uk/check-mot-status, enter your vehicle registration number, and you will see the date your current MOT runs out, along with details of past MOT results including any advisories. It takes about thirty seconds and it is completely free. You do not need to create an account or provide any personal details beyond the registration number.
You can also find your MOT expiry date on your MOT certificate, which you should have received from the testing centre. If you have lost the certificate, the online check is your best option. The certificate itself is not a legal requirement to carry, but having a copy is useful for your records.
What Happens If You Drive Without an MOT?
Driving without a valid MOT is an offence that can result in a fine of up to one thousand pounds. But the financial penalty is only part of the problem. If you are involved in an accident while your MOT has expired, your car insurance is likely to be invalidated. That means you could be personally liable for damage to other vehicles, property, and people. The potential cost of that is far greater than any fine.
It is also worth knowing that your car can be clamped, seized, or destroyed if it is found on a public road without a valid MOT (unless you are driving it to a pre-booked MOT appointment). The DVLA and ANPR cameras make it increasingly easy for authorities to identify vehicles without valid MOTs, so the chances of getting caught are higher than you might think.
When Should You Book Your MOT?
You can get your car tested up to one month (minus a day) before your current MOT expires without losing any days from your new certificate. So if your MOT runs out on 15 May, you can book it from 16 April onwards and your new certificate will still be valid until 15 May the following year. This gives you a comfortable window to get it done without the stress of leaving it to the last day.
Tips for Remembering
- Sign up for MOT reminders from GOV.UK. The government offers a free reminder service that sends you an email or text when your MOT is about to expire. You can set this up at gov.uk/mot-reminder.
- Put it in your calendar. Set a reminder for six weeks before the expiry date. This gives you time to book a test, deal with any repairs, and still get it done within the one-month window.
- Link it to something else you do annually. If your MOT is due in the same month as your birthday or another annual event, use that as a mental trigger.
Keep Everything in One Place
Your MOT date, service records, insurance details, and tax status are all connected. Keeping track of them separately, in different drawers, emails, and apps, makes it easy to let something slip. Orlo brings all your vehicle documents together in one place and can remind you before important dates like your MOT expiry, so you never find yourself caught out.
Checking your MOT takes less than a minute. Missing it can cost you a lot more than that. It is one of the simplest things you can do to stay on the right side of the law and keep your insurance valid.
