Missing it is more automatic than you would think

It is enforced automatically

The DVLA checks vehicle tax against the insurance database continuously. An untaxed car is flagged and fined without anyone needing to spot it manually.

The fine arrives whether you knew or not

Forgetting is not a defence. A late licensing penalty can land on your doorstep even if you simply lost track of the renewal date.

It is not always the same date every year

Road tax runs in either 6 or 12 month periods depending on how you set it up, so the due date is not always as predictable as an annual insurance renewal.

How it works

1

Upload your V5C or tax reminder

Orlo reads your vehicle registration and due date from the DVLA reminder letter or the V5C logbook.

2

Accept the reminders

Reminders are suggested at 6 weeks, 2 weeks, and 3 days before your tax is due.

3

Renew online in minutes

Vehicle tax can be renewed on gov.uk in a few minutes once you know the date. The hard part is just remembering it.

Three reminders, same timing as MOT

Before

6 weeks

Plenty of notice

Nothing to do yet beyond knowing the date is coming.

Before

2 weeks

Get it sorted

Renewing online only takes a few minutes once you have the details to hand.

Before

3 days

Final reminder

Your tax is due in 3 days. Renew now to avoid any risk of a lapse.

Every date for the car, together

Road tax rarely travels alone. MOT, insurance, and driving licence renewal all sit in the same place, so nothing about one vehicle is left to memory.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check when my road tax is due?
The DVLA sends a reminder letter (a V11) shortly before your tax runs out, and the date is also shown on your V5C logbook. Upload either one and Orlo will pick out the due date automatically.
Can I tax my car without a reminder letter?
Yes, gov.uk lets you check and renew vehicle tax using just your registration number. Orlo is there for the reminder itself, not as a replacement for the DVLA's own renewal process.
Does Orlo also track my MOT?
Yes. MOT has its own dedicated reminder timing since it needs a booked test rather than an online renewal. Upload both and Orlo tracks them separately, side by side.
What if my car is exempt from road tax?
Some vehicles, such as certain electric cars or those over 40 years old, are tax exempt but still need to be registered as such annually. Upload the confirmation you receive and Orlo will track that renewal the same way.
Can I track more than one vehicle?
Yes. Each vehicle is tracked on its own documents and its own dates, so a household with more than one car can keep them all organised in the same place.
Is it free?
Yes. The free plan includes 5 uploads a month, comfortably enough for a car's tax, MOT, and insurance together. Basic is £2.99 a month for 50 uploads with every feature unlocked.
