Does Your MOT Expire at Midnight? Here is When It Actually Runs Out
You have checked your MOT and it expires today. Can you still drive home from work tonight? Can you nip to the supermarket this evening? It is a surprisingly common question, and the answer is more straightforward than most people think.
Your MOT Is Valid for the Entire Expiry Date
Yes, your MOT runs until the end of the day shown on your certificate. That means if your MOT expiry date is 19 April 2026, you can legally drive at any point on 19 April. Your certificate effectively expires at 23:59 on that date. From midnight, or more precisely from the start of 20 April, you are no longer covered.
So if you are driving home from work at 10pm on your expiry date, you are fine. But if you set off at 7am the next morning without a valid certificate, you are technically committing an offence.
What the Law Says
The Road Traffic Act 1988 requires a valid MOT certificate for vehicles over three years old being used on public roads. The certificate covers a specific date range, and the expiry date is inclusive. There is no specific mention of a time of day because the certificate works on whole days. The day it expires, it is still valid. The day after, it is not.
What the Police Actually Check
Police officers and ANPR cameras check your MOT status against the DVSA database. This database records the expiry date but not a specific time. In practice, the system will show your MOT as expired from the day after your expiry date. If you were stopped on the expiry date itself, the system would still show your MOT as valid.
Common Confusion
Some drivers confuse the MOT expiry with insurance or road tax rules, which can work slightly differently. Others worry that because their test was done at 2pm, the certificate expires at 2pm a year later. That is not how it works. The MOT certificate runs to the end of the expiry date regardless of what time the test was carried out.
Do Not Cut It This Fine
While it is useful to know you have until the end of the day, relying on this is risky. If your MOT expires today, you should already have your next test booked. You can MOT your car up to a month early without losing time on the certificate, so there is really no need to be counting down the hours.
