What To Do When a Deadline Is Already Close

If you find a letter with a reply-by date that has already passed, or is a day away, do not assume it is too late. Email or message the school office directly rather than waiting to catch the teacher at pick up. Most schools would rather sort a late permission slip over email than have a child miss a trip because a form did not make it back on time.

What Is Actually Worth Keeping Long Term

Not every school letter needs filing forever, but a few things are worth keeping past the reply-by date:

• Confirmation of any medical information you have given the school, such as allergies or medication instructions
• School reports, since they are useful later for tracking progress or for applications
• Anything relating to SEN support, EHCPs, or formal assessments
• Payment confirmations for anything expensive, in case of a dispute later
